Annual Speech Day
Date : 5/12/2013

The Annual Speech Day was successfully held on December 5, 2013. Hundreds of graduates and their families, students, alumni, principals, assistant principals and teachers of other governmental schools attended the ceremony. This year we were especially honoured to have Mr. Chong Chan Yau (莊陳有), MBE, the President of Hong Kong Blind Union, as our Guest of Honour.

Our Principal, Mr. Wong, presented the school report in which he highlighted the outstanding achievements of the graduates in the HKDSE. Mr. Wong mentioned the awards students earned in various areas including academic, sports and music etc. Finally, Mr. Wong expressed his gratitude to the PTA, Alumni Association, SMC Members for their support and guidance. Our Guest of Honor, Mr. Chong Chan Yau, addressed the graduates and guests with an enlightening speech about why he is interested in global issues, two important people who influenced his life and wish all of us a very fruitful journey ahead.

Lai Kei Chi, the Head Boy last year, delivered a vote of thanks to the school on behalf of all the graduates. The ceremony ended in a joyful atmosphere with the wonderful performances of the Dance Club, Choir and Chinese Orchestra. They were award winners and winning teams of many different local competitions. Their success proved that the development of students' multiple intelligences in our school was fruitful and the mission of our school in cultivating students’ talent was achieved.

After the ceremony held in the school hall, a tea reception party was held in which our teachers, guests, parents and alumni can enjoy great refreshments and have a re-union time in chatting with each other. In addition, during the sharing session which was held in the school library, our Guest of Honor, Mr. Chong had shared with our student representatives about his contributions to the society in many aspects.

The Speech

Honorable guests, ladies and gentlemen, teachers and students,

First of all, on behalf of the students of Sha Tin Government Secondary School, I would like to thank our Guest of Honor Mr. Chong Chan Yau, for being with us on the occasion of our annual speech day.

For over 40 years, our school has never stopped to enlighten bright minds and nurture numerous outstanding alumni. All these years, they have devoted themselves to society with passion and talent. They should be all our role models.

Besides, our campus has developed into a tremendous place for learning providing us with various facilities and resources. To achieve this advancement, we must thank the Parents and Teachers Association and the Alumni Association for their unwavering support.

How can we talk about schools without thanking the principal, who wholeheartedly takes care of the students’ welfare? Here, I would like to thank our principal, Mr Wong, for his support and care to each and every one.

Also, may I express our warmest gratitude to our teachers. It is not only academic knowledge they teach us, but also the attitude to life, love and education. Teaching is never an easy task. It is even harder to comprehend our mischief and demerits. It is the patience and encouragement that pushes us forward in search for excellence.

Lastly, may I express our greatest gratitude to our parents who brought us into this world of opportunities and challenges. No matter what role we play, they support us wholeheartedly. They have always reminded us to care for the others, rather than care only for our own interests. We thank them for sharing with us their wisdom and love.

Life is a journey in which all challenges seem frightening. However, do you remember Steve Jobs once said, “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.” With determination, we accomplish all we set out to do. May I wish my fellow graduates every success in their future endeavors. Once again, thanks to our Guest of Honor, Mr Chong Chan Yau, for his inspiring speech. Thank You.

Terry Lai
